Catholic Charities Boston (CCB)  – one of Massachusetts’ leading social service agencies – seeks Shelter Managers to oversee all operations of the shelter including employee supervision, day-to-day operations, and site management. The Shelter Manager of each location ensures that employees are providing a safe and fostering residential environment to shelter residents while serving as the primary liaison between volunteer groups and events.

Major Responsibilities 

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor shelter staff; support staff in providing comprehensive services to shelter guests focused on guests’ individual needs and rehousing goals
  • Assist with supervision of staff and assist Associate Director of Shelter Services to prepare and meet with employees for 90 day and annual performance appraisals
  • Responsible for compliance of program policies and procedures as they pertain to state and contract regulations. Implement and reinforce required policies and procedures
  • Report serious incidents to the Associate Director of Shelter Services and Department of Housing and Community Development as appropriate
  • Ensure all inspections and licensing requirements are met
  • Assure guests receive quality support from program employee; be available to listen to and give feedback to guests as needed
  • Complete weekly shift schedule including planning for absences. Consult with Associate Director of Shelter Services and staffing agency to schedule temporary staff as needed
  • Work with the Associate Director of Shelter Services to develop program policies/procedures as required by CCB, Department of Housing and Community Development, and funders
  • Implement and reinforce required policies and procedures
  • Ensure adequate staffing and on-call coverage; be available days, nights, and weekends for on-call rotation and program coverage as needed
  • Participate in grant writing to support the shelter and care of guests and residents
  • Local travel as needed. Attend internal/external staff and agency meetings and trainings and participate in community and other meetings as required

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 3+ years of direct care or related experience, ideally working in a shelter or residential program, and 1+ year supervisory experience with proven leadership skills
  • Background and knowledge of mental health and/or addiction issues preferred
  • Demonstrated familiarity working with a diverse and often difficult client population experiencing barriers to housing stability and self-sustainability
  • Working knowledge of homeless shelter operations and residential program state regulations; experience working with community resources
  • Proven skill, prior training, and competency with crisis avoidance and/or de-escalation skills. Competent leadership and decision-making skills
  • Must complete ServSafe certification within 6 months of start date
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks while working independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; competent with virtual platforms (such as Teams, Zoom) and other technical platforms
  • Commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities including understanding and identifying with the organizational mission
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and to promoting a diverse and inclusive working environment
  • Ability to work various hours on site and on call as required to meet the program needs
  • Bachelor’s degree in social service or related field a plus
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
